Project Proposal
I will be conducting my internship at Mountain Mechanical here in Durango, Colorado. Mountain Mechanical is exactly what it sounds like, a mechanic shop, providing automobile maintenance and repair. My mentor, Dave Crom, is the owner of the organization. Mountain Mechanical is able to do things from normal oil changes to engine/ electrical repair. This information and new knowledge is what Dave is able to offer me. Although I will only be there for three weeks, I hope to be useful to the organization.
When Rachael Sands, Animas High School’s career and college counselor, informed us that we were going to have a junior internship opportunity a.k.a. Leading Internships for New Knowledge (LINK), I went out to find a mechanic shop willing to take me in. I came across an article in the Durango Herald that showed members of Mountain Mechanical teaching women on basics of auto mechanics. Soon after seeing that, I call their main office and talked to Dave and he showed interest. I let him know that Rachael would be contacting him about mentor information and then I interviewed for the internship. I got the internship and was very excited to see what future Mountain Mechanical held for me.
I want to become an auto mechanic and soon after that I wish to work towards getting my diesel certificate to work on diesel trucks. Eventually, I want to work on opening up my own shop. I hope that this internship will be my “foot in the door” for my career goals. I will learn skills from the mechanics perspective as well as from the business perspective. I hope to have a continuing relationship with the people at Mountain Mechanical and work to have a part-time job with them to continue my learning. If I am unable to have a continuing job with them I will have enough knowledge to find a job with other places and be grateful for what I have learned.
My project for now is to learn how to do a full tune up on my own car. I own a 1996 Jeep Cherokee and although I know exactly what is included in a tune-up, I do not know how to change anything myself. A tune up includes: New spark plugs, Oil change, Ignition wires, distributor cap, distributor rotor, air cleaner, fuel filter, and have the PVC valve cleaned or replaced. Depending on the state of your car depends on what you can change, replace, or keep the same. This project is relevant to anybody who would wish to save money and/ or become a mechanic themselves. A tune up on your car is very important to do and learning to do it yourself will help you very much and keep you from spending labor hours. I am really glad that Dave has chosen to teach me how to do these things.
Throughout my internship I hope to learn many new skills including the ones I need to be able to do my project as well as become a mechanic. I will exhibit my car at our exhibition as well as a PowerPoint/ video on what exactly happened to get to that point. I will explain the useful things I learned outside of my project. For example, the business point of owning a company and how everybody plays an important role in keeping the business open and running. I feel that this internship will be a great opportunity for me and hopefully open up the idea of an internship for future Animas High School juniors.
